Mix Studio Panel: Joe Bonamassa’s 'Time Clocks'—Stereo and Immersive

Blues great Joe Bonamassa recorded his much-heralded, late-2021 release Time Clocks at Germano Studios in New York City, then sent the tracks to Bob Clearmountain at Mix This! in Los Angeles for stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes, with all of it overseen by producer Kevin Shirley in Australia. Welcome to today’s recording industry! Join the Time Clocks production team as they detail the art, the process and the approach to both the stereo and immersive mixes. Are they the same? Should they be?

Wholegrain Digital Systems LLC
Wholegrain Digital Systems LLC was founded by Duane Wise in 2007 to create and market unique digital signal processors for professional audio applications. Its flagship product is the award-winning DynPEQ family of DAW plug-ins. DynPEQ is a complete and seamless integration of classic parametric EQ and dynamics processing. In addition to demonstrating DynPEQ and addressing your queries, Wholegrain will provide gentle reminders that Quartet DynPEQ supports multichannel stems such that its dynamics processing will not affect a spatial mix.

Dr. Nuno Fonseca, Ph.D., the creator of Sound Particles, made a huge splash in cinema and television sound with the creation of Sound Particles, an immersive audio software capable of generating thousands (even millions) of sounds in a virtual 3D audio world. Now, he has optimized his line for music, as well, with a host of new products. Explorer gives users the most powerful way to manage sounds in a fast and intuitive way—from stereo to immersive formats. Density uses granular technology to turn a single sound into small and large ensembles with several layers. Space Controller uses your phone as a movement reader and pans the sounds to where you're pointing. And Energy Panner uses the intensity of a sound to control its movement without any effort or additional routing.

Creating Immersive Audio for the Metaverse and Cinematic 360 Video
Presented by:

Capturing, post-producing and mixing immersive audio for the Metaverse and Cinematic 360 music video will all become crucial skills in the coming years. Power Station at BerkleeNYC is already working with cutting-edge technologies that accomplish those goals, and will demonstrate those processes throughout the day in the Black Box theatre.

The facility has multiple Jaunt cameras for making 360-degree immersive VR videos; each Jaunt is based around 24 8K cameras that save to a 64GB SD card. With the technology, Power Station has produced dozens of music clips with artists like Victor Wooten, saxophonist Grace Kelly and Berklee’s own Indian Ensemble.

More than a half-dozen Oculus headsets will be on-hand to allow attendees to fully experience performances in VR, and a 360 immersive capture session with attendees participating is tentatively planned as well.

Mix Studio Panel: Mixing, Mastering and Distributing Immersive Music

Since its industry-wide emergence three years ago, immersive music has mostly meant immersive music mixing, and engineers have been left largely on their own in figuring out the new technologies, workflows and creative possibilities. Right away, they found that the care and attention to deliverables—in multiple formats, for multiple streaming services—was proving more complex and taking up a lot more time than first imagined. At the same time, mastering engineers and distributors/streamers have been working out the kinks and developing new workflows, to ensure that consumers hear a true representation of the immersive intent, whether in 7.1.4 or in “binaural” over a pair of headphones.
