Keynote | Refit? Remodel? Rewire? Retune? Rebuild?: What You Need to Know Before Adding Immersive Playback to a Stereo Mix Room

In this year’s Keynote Conversation, we turn our attention to the studio itself, asking the basic questions that all artists, producers, engineers and studio owners—regardless of market, client list, square footage or budget—will ultimately address: “I know I’ll need more speakers, but what else? Do I need to go into the walls or can I use stands? Do I need to add power? Dante? Is my ceiling high enough? Will it mess with my stereo playback? Am I going to have to get a second mortgage?” In this special presentation, Mix co-editor Tom Kenny sits down with world-renowned studio designer/builder Michael Cronin and world-renowned producer/engineer Chuck Ainlay to discuss the wide variety of options and key points to consider when turning your stereo mix room into a dual-purpose, immersive/stereo powerhouse.

Immersive Music Mixing: The Proscenium and Beyond

For the past 70-plus years, music production and playback has been based on the proscenium, with a left-right-phantom-center image presented to the listener, as if from the front wall, or a stage. Essentially the same for 5.1, 7.1, first-gen IMAX and all other versions of surround sound, on through the introduction of Atmos and 360RA. And yet…immersive music feels different, and it’s just getting started. Nashville mix engineers discuss what they have discovered, learned, adopted or been happily surprised by these past five years in working with objects, beds, LCR, sides, rear and heights.

Mix Translation: From Studio to Binaural to Streamer to Home

We start with the assumption that there is a final, master, future-proof version of the immersive mix, at the highest sample rate and bit depth, ideally created in a studio with speakers. And that the end goal is to bring listeners, whether in a car, sitting in a high-end home theater or laying on the couch with headphones on, as close as possible to that experience. Immersive music distribution and playback poses entirely new, and sometimes maddening, challenges for mix and mastering engineers, while at the same time opening up tremendous, all-new creative possibilities. Here, engineers discuss the tips and techniques they’ve developed to help ensure that consumers experience a quality immersive mix.

Demystifying Immersive Mastering

While mix engineers are embracing and creating amazing immersive mixes, the step of mastering for immersive is being mostly ignored. Our panel of professional engineers have a proven track record of mastering audio in the immersive format and will discuss why it is critical to have your mixes mastered by a mastering engineer who is familiar with the format and challenges that could arise. This panel will be moderated by Dave Rieley, Director of Focusrite Group Professional and a working Immersive mix engineer.
