Mix Panel: Broadway Music and Sound Design

Over the past decade, no segment of the entertainment industry has experienced such rapid advances in quality audio playback and control than the theater, i.e., Broadway Sound. Those huge advances—in microphone technology, advanced RF, immersive creative tools, steerable P.A. systems and sometimes hundreds of spot speakers—then fueled, in turn, a creative explosion in the integration of music and sound design elements to help tell the story on stage. Which then led to more advances, and then even more creative experimentation. Audiences have noticed. From last year’s Tony Award-winning sound on Stereophonic, to the street ambience of Ragtime, to the rock and roll power of The Lost Boys, sound and music have taken over Broadway.
